Fine Aggregate and its effect to Mix Design of Concrete

It performs an important role in mix design of concrete. Various factors of fine aggregates that affect the design mix of concrete such as fineness modulus, moisture content, specific gravity, and silt content.

Higher the specific gravity of fine aggregate stronger concrete can be produced So Mix design cannot be done without deriving of specific gravity of fine aggregates.

Fineness Modulus of Fine aggregates

It is the major factors that influence concrete mix design as it controls the proportion of sand in concrete mixture. It is calculated by sieve analysis based method and the overall fineness of sand is given by factor called fineness modulus.

Moisture Contentof Fine aggregates

From this factor we can understand how much water is required for water/cementitious materials ratio so Its important to determine the moisture content of aggregate prior to mixing. If the moisture content is positive, the aggregate has surface moisture and will contribute water to the Plain cement concrete, while if the moisture content is negative the aggregate is air dry to some degree and will absorb moisture from the Plain cement concrete.

Specific Gravityof Fine aggregates

Specific gravity is the ratio of solid density of sand particles to the density of water. Higher the specific gravity heavier is the sand particles and higher is the density of concrete. In contrary, a lower specific gravity of sand will result in lower density of concrete.

Silt Contentof Fineaggregates

It is also an important to derive silt content of fine aggregates as If we use silty sand for bonding, it will reduce the strength and cause rework. Its affect the workability of concrete. The permissible value of silt content in Sand is 8%.
